Prizren Literary Salon

An Annual International Gathering of Writers and Readers  ·  Prizren, Kosovo

August 8, 2026

❖     ❖     ❖

It started as a casual summer dinner with friends — Christian Lorentzen, Lily Lynch, Mikra Namani, Valdete Berisha, and Michael Barron — getting together to talk literature and stuff, drink and eat until late, and now we’re here. At the heart of it the Prizren Literary Salon, founded by Mikra Namani and Valdete Berisha, is about literature, reading, and writing. It brings together regional and international writers and poets to Prizren, Kosovo, for a two-day visit which coincides with Dokufest, an international documentary and short film festival.

The salon is a personal initiative, unaffiliated with any group, organization, or entity. We wish we were able to alleviate some of the costs for writers traveling to Prizren, but we currently do not have funds to cover any expenses. Our visiting writers are the stars of the show, and we are grateful they can come to share their work, forge new friendships, and connect with other artists in the region.

The reading is open to the public and will take place on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 18:00, at the iconic BarAca. Readings are primarily in English.

Prizren,
Kosovo

Prizren is Kosovo’s second largest city, located on the slopes of the Sharr Mountains in the southwest of the country. First mentioned in records in 1019 during the reign of Emperor Basil II, the city has served for centuries as a crossroads of cultures, faiths, and languages. Its preserved Ottoman old town, medieval fortress, and landmarks such as the Sinan Pasha Mosque and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Our Lady of Ljeviš make it one of the most historically rich cities in the Western Balkans.

  • Primary Reading Venue BarAca · Marin Barleti St, Prizren 20000, Kosovo
  • Getting There Prishtina Airport (PRN) — 85 km · Tirana Airport (TIA) — 170 km · Skopje International Airport (SKP) — 102 km

The closest airport to Prizren is Prishtina International Airport, about an hour away by car. Skopje is a little over two hours, while Tirana is over two and a half hours from Prizren. Each airport is located in a different country: Kosovo, North Macedonia, Albania. Check for visa or other entry requirements.
  • Lodging, Transportation, General Safety, Currency, Language
Lodging: Lodging in Prizren ranges from Ottoman-style guesthouses in the Old Town to modern boutique hotels and budget-friendly hostels near the river and Shadërvan Square. Most visitors choose to stay close to the city center, where cobblestone streets, cafés, mosques, and the fortress are all within walking distance.

Transportation: In addition to car rentals and taxis, buses are available and generally an affordable way of moving between Prizren and other cities, airports, etc.

General Safety: Prizren is generally considered a safe and comfortable city for visitors, with a calm atmosphere and walkable historic center. As in any other city, standard precautions apply, such as staying aware of your surroundings, keeping valuables secure, and using trusted transportation when needed.

Currency: Kosovo's official currency is the euro.

Language: The main local languages spoken in Prizren are Albanian, Turkish, and Serbian, though English is also widely spoken.
  • Dokufest: International Documentary and Short Film Festival. The Prizren Literary Salon takes place during Dokufest, an international documentary and short film festival. Founded in 2002, Dokufest draws filmmakers, artists, and audiences from around the world to Prizren each August for a week of screenings, talks, open-air cinema and other events scattered in different venues.
